Is there an non-toxic sealer for hand painted dishes?
Last year I didn’t have the money for gifts, so I had the great idea of buying a set of cheap chinette dishes and painting a holiday them on them for my mom and dad. I used art paints that the craft store told me would not wash off. It took weeks. To my utter disappointment, one round of hand washing caused the designs to peel off. I looked for a sealer that could salvage the rest of them, but I am unable to find one that is non-toxic.
After speaking with the owner of a ceramics store, I learned that there are non-toxic paint sealers, but must be fired in an oven. Since the dishes are not ceramic, they cracked in the oven.
I appreciate any ideas you might have on how I could save all my work. Thank you so much!
No
Hand painted dishes are purely decorative, as use destroys the paint. Any sealer would also be destroyed by usage.
Next time get ceramic blanks and use Ceramic Glazes.
